How to pack a printer for shipping safely

Although they look sturdy, printers are very fragile items and need to be packed carefully for shipping.

  1. Take the original box of your printer. The best packing material for shipping a printer is its original box. If you want to transport a used printer and do not have the original packaging, use a sturdy cardboard box with the appropriate dimensions for your printer.
  2. Remove the ink cartridges. Never leave ink cartridges (for inkjet printers) or toner cartridges (for laser printers) inside the printer when moving it. Pack the cartridges individually inside resealable plastic bags to prevent leakage.
  3. Unplug the cables. Disconnect the power cord and USB cables and secure them to the back of the printer with masking tape. Carefully remove any other removable parts from the printer and pack them individually in bubble wrap.
  4. Remove paper from the printer. Then, close all non-removable trays, panels, or doors of the printer and secure them with masking tape.
  5. Wrap the printer in bubble wrap. Take a large piece of bubble wrap and position the printer in the middle. Next, wrap the printer completely with two layers of bubble wrap, ensuring that all edges and corners are covered.
  6. Place the printer in the box. Line the bottom of the box with a layer of packing peanuts. Then pack the wrapped printer inside the box, filling all empty spaces with more packing peanuts and other packaging materials such as crumpled paper.
  7. Close and seal the box. You can also add a “Fragile” or “This side up” label, but please take care to pack the printer properly for shipping to minimise the risk of damage, regardless of the warning label.
