Types of pallets – pallet dimensions

Europallets (or EUR pallets, EPAL pallets) are the most commonly used in Europe and are available in 4 different sizes and each weigh approximately 20-25kg. Euro pallet dimensions (width x length) are:

  • EUR 1: 80 x 120cm (most commonly used in Europe)
  • EUR 2: 120 x 100cm (most commonly used in UK)
  • EUR 3: 100 x 120cm
  • EUR 6: 80 x 60cm

ISO pallets are available in 6 different sizes and pallet dimensions vary depending on the region in which they are used:

  • Europe: 100 x 120cm, 106.7 x 106.7cm or 80 x 120cm
  • North America: 101.6 x 121.9cm or 106.7 x 106.7cm
  • Australia: 116.5 x 116.5 cm
  • Asia: 100 x 120cm, 106.7 x 106.7cm or 110 x 110cm


Types of pallets – materials

Wooden pallets are available in soft or hardwood with the latter providing more stability for heavier loads.
Plastic pallets are made from recycled PET or new HDPE and are more expensive, as they are longer lasting compared to wooden pallets.
Paper pallets or Eco-pallets can hold the same weight as a standard wooden pallet, but are more commonly used for lighter loads. Eco-pallets are the most environmentally friendly option, as they are made of paper and can be recycled easily.
Steel pallets provide the most longevity, especially when transporting freight in harsh conditions. Steel pallets are more expensive, but are ideal for heavier loads such as transporting ammunition and machinery.

How to prepare a pallet for transportation

When preparing your pallet shipment for collection, it is important to ensure your pallet is packed correctly and securely to avoid damage during transport. Packing pallets correctly is also important to minimize the risk of injury during handling. Our packing guidelines for pallets will explain how to safely and securely prepare your pallet shipment.


Choose the right pallet – which is sturdy enough to support the load. Make sure your pallet is intact and in good condition, with no cracks or protruding nails. Know the height and weight limit before you begin loading your pallet.

Place paper liners under the load and between boxes to fill any gaps. Stack your pallet evenly, with heavier items placed at the bottom of the pallet. Take care to ensure your pallet does not exceed 220 cm height and no overhang.

Use pallet packaging materials such as stretch-wrapping, bubble-wrap and foil to secure your load. Wrap it tightly and twist and tie the plastic wrap to the base of the pallet. Try to move the boxes on the top gently, to make sure they don’t wobble and the plastic film doesn’t ripple.

Label your pallet clearly – placing the label on the side of each pallet. For extra reinforcement, use edge boards and a dust cover sheet. We recommend to use corner boards for double loaded pallets.

The difference between stackable pallets and non-stackable pallets

Stackable pallets are able to be placed one on top of the other and are the preferred type of pallet by freight carriers as they are able to maximise the space inside the vehicle. With non-stackable pallets, this is not possible and some freight couriers will impose extra charges if you decide to use them.
If you are using non-stackable pallets, we recommend to contact our logistics experts who can tailor an individual offer, and to mark your shipment as non-stackable to avoid refusal by the delivery driver.

Where can I buy pallets?
Pallets can be purchased from most hardware stores, specialised pallet stores and you can buy new or used pallets online. Buying a used pallet is the cheapest way to ship a pallet, however, you should ensure the pallet is in good condition and the dimensions and weight limits can accommodate your shipment.
What can I ship on pallets?
Pallets are recommended for shipping multiple boxes and large items which do not exceed the dimensions of the pallet. If you have an item which exceeds the dimensions of the pallet, you can also ship on a double pallet.
When should I choose to ship a pallet rather than a box?
Shipping bulky or odd shaped items on pallets provides increased stability and minimises the risk of damage during transport. Moreover, pallets are easier to manoeuvre, making them ideal for heavier shipments.
Is insurance included with pallet shipping?
Yes. Each pallet shipment is insured according to CMR conventions. When booking your pallet shipment, we also offer additional insurance at a low price.
Can I track my pallet shipment?

Yes. Every shipment is given a unique tracking number, and you can trace your shipment a few ways:
